Flooring tools FAQs

What tools do I need to fit a carpet?

A carpet knife and spare blades. A staple hammer or hammer tacker for the underlay. Carpet gripper. A tucker to push the edge behind the gripper. A trimmer for a clean cut along the skirting. Knee pads. Add seam sealer and a seam roller if you are joining two pieces. All are in our carpet tools range. The Carpet Fitter Starter Pack puts the essentials in one order.

What tools do I need for laminate or LVT?

A sharp knife and blades. A tape measure, a square and a scribe for cutting round door frames and pipes. A straight edge for long cuts. A floor roller to press LVT into its adhesive. For stick-down floors you also need a spreader or trowel, and a mixing paddle if you are screeding first. See hard floor tools, or start with the LVT Fitter Starter Pack.

Which stapler or nailer do I need?

It depends on what you are fixing. For underlay and general tacking, use a hammer tacker such as the Tacwise A11. It takes 140-type staples and needs no power. For carpet fitting, the Maestri ME4000 electric stapler fires divergent staples that grip well in timber. For laying floors, the Maestri ME606 and cordless MC606 take 606-series staples. The Orion Power CN45 coil nailer takes collated flooring nails for bigger areas. We stock the staples and nails for each. The size your tool takes is on its product page.

Which blades fit my knife?

Carpet and vinyl knives such as the Dolphin, Marlin and Guppy take standard trapezoid, hook and concave blades. Our Sweeney Todd blades are sold by type: hook blades for cutting carpet from the back, concave blades for trimming. Smart multi-tool blades are listed by width and fitting. Not sure? The product pages say what fits what, or call us on 01482 243038.

Do you sell tools individually or only in packs?

Both. Every tool is sold on its own. Staples, nails and blades come in boxes or packs. The two starter packs, carpet and LVT, are a quicker way to get set up. They are made from the same individual products.

Are these trade-quality tools?

Yes. We only stock brands fitters use every day: Roberts, Janser, Maestri, Tacwise, OX, Tracer and Sweeney Todd. DIY customers get the same tools at the same prices. No minimum order.

How quickly can you deliver tools?

Free delivery to mainland UK takes up to 3 working days, on any order size. Next working day is from £5.99 at checkout. Order by 2pm on a weekday for same-day despatch. A surcharge applies to the Highlands and islands. See our delivery page.

More about our flooring tools

Good tools are the difference between a floor that looks fitted and one that looks laid. Our range is built around the jobs fitters do: cutting and trimming carpet, fixing underlay and gripper, laying and rolling LVT, scribing laminate to walls, and mixing and spreading screeds and adhesives. That means proper carpet knives, not craft knives. Staplers and nailers with the right consumables. Straight edges and squares that stay true. Knee pads that last.

The brands reflect that. Roberts for carpet trimmers, tuckers, rollers and tool bags. Janser for straight edges and knee pads. Maestri and Spotnails for staple guns and staples. Tacwise for hammer tackers, staples and nails. Orion Power for the CN45 coil nailer and flooring nails. OX for hand tools, trowels and clamps. Tracer for marking and measuring. Sweeney Todd for blades. Everything is stocked in Hull and sent with free 3 working day delivery to mainland UK, so a new blade or stapler arrives before the next job. Starting a kit?
